Key takeaways

  • The Altruists is a scripted, eight-episode Netflix limited series about the FTX collapse. It is not a documentary. Netflix coverage gives 19 November 2026 as the premiere, and the first trailer came out on 8 October 2026.
  • Anthony Boyle plays Sam Bankman-Fried and Julia Garner plays Caroline Ellison. Scenes and dialogue are dramatized, so treat the series as drama and the court record as the facts.
  • The real case has been through the courts: a US jury convicted Bankman-Fried on seven counts in November 2023 and he was sentenced to 25 years in March 2024. An appeals court upheld that in June 2026, and he has asked the US Supreme Court to review it.
  • For anyone who owns bitcoin the lasting lesson is custody. A balance on an exchange is a claim on a company, and in FTX’s bankruptcy customer claims were set in dollars as of the filing date.

What is The Altruists?

The Altruists is a Netflix limited series that dramatizes the rise and collapse of FTX, the crypto exchange founded by Sam Bankman-Fried, and its sister trading firm Alameda Research, run by Caroline Ellison. Netflix’s announcement, as reported by the trade press, describes eight episodes, all released together on 19 November 2026. The official trailer on YouTube came out on 8 October 2026, according to press coverage.

If you searched for an FTX documentary, this is something different. The story is told with actors and written scenes, and the makers say it draws on reporting by Kevin T. Dugan and Jen Wieczner for New York magazine. Coverage of Netflix’s own description says the series follows the pair from idealism to the loss of about $8 billion in customer money. That figure is Netflix’s framing, and this page does not vouch for it.

Who is in it and who made it

Anthony Boyle plays Bankman-Fried and Julia Garner plays Ellison. Graham Moore created the series, writes for it and runs it with co-showrunner Jacqueline Hoyt. The cast list also includes actors playing other people from the FTX story. We do not repeat the full list here, because it can change and the facts about those people are better read in court and press records than in a casting sheet.

Nothing in a trailer proves what happened. A drama compresses years into hours, merges scenes and imagines private conversations. That is not a flaw, but it is why the next section sticks to the public record.

What actually happened at FTX

FTX collapsed in November 2022, filed for bankruptcy in the US and left customers unable to withdraw. Prosecutors then charged Bankman-Fried, arguing that money customers had deposited on the exchange was taken and used by Alameda Research. These are the main public milestones.

Did FTX customers get their money back?

Many creditors have been repaid, but in dollars rather than in coins. The bankruptcy valued every customer claim in US dollars as of 11 November 2022, the day of the filing, whatever coins the account held. That is why customers who held bitcoin did not share in any later rise in its price, and why many objected to the plan.

Payments have come in several rounds through the FTX Recovery Trust, and press coverage of the fifth distribution in July 2026 put the total at close to $10 billion. The Trust’s own announcements list recovery percentages for each class of creditor and are the place to check figures, because they change with each round. One practical warning from those notices applies to everyone: they warn about phishing and say the Trust will never ask anyone to connect a wallet. Common Bitcoin Scams and How to Spot Them covers the pattern.

What the collapse teaches about keeping bitcoin

The lessons are old ones, and FTX is the most expensive example of them.

A balance on an exchange is a promise, not coins in your hands. When you leave bitcoin with a platform, you hold a claim against the company, and a company that mixes customer money with its own trading can lose it. The Power of Self-Custody: Owning Your Own Keys explains the alternative and its own risks, such as losing the keys.

Reputation is not a safeguard. Famous founders, big sponsorships and polished apps are marketing. They tell you nothing about where your money is. The questions that matter are how the platform holds customer assets, who audits it and what happens in a failure, which How to Choose a Crypto Exchange: A Safety Checklist walks through.

Deposit insurance usually does not cover this. Bank deposit insurance protects bank accounts, not balances on a crypto exchange. Bitcoin Bank Accounts and Savings: What Actually Exists explains where that line sits for US readers.

Match the storage to the amount and your skills. Keeping a small amount on an exchange to trade is a different decision from keeping a large amount there for years. How to Store Bitcoin: Exchange, Wallet or Cold Storage? lays out the options without brands, and What Is a Hardware Wallet? covers the most common self-custody device. If you are new to all this, start with the Start Here learning path.

None of this means self-custody is the right choice for everyone, or that exchanges always fail. It means counterparty risk is real and worth pricing in. For decisions about your own money, speak to a qualified professional.

How to watch it with a clear head

Enjoy the series as a story and check the facts elsewhere. Do not read the plot as a guide to who did what, and do not treat a character’s decisions as a template for yours. Be careful with the news cycle too: shows like this bring a wave of “FTX refund” messages, fake exchanges and video links. Go to the official claims site directly, never through a link someone sends you.

Frequently asked questions

Is The Altruists a documentary?

No. The Altruists is a scripted limited series, a dramatization of the FTX story with actors playing real people. Scenes and dialogue are written for television, so use it as a starting point and rely on court records and reporting for facts.

When does The Altruists premiere on Netflix?

Netflix coverage gives 19 November 2026 as the release date, with all eight episodes arriving together. The first official trailer was published on 8 October 2026. Check Netflix itself for availability where you live.

Who plays Sam Bankman-Fried and Caroline Ellison?

Anthony Boyle plays Sam Bankman-Fried and Julia Garner plays Caroline Ellison. Graham Moore created the series and runs it with Jacqueline Hoyt.

What happened to Sam Bankman-Fried?

A US jury convicted him on seven counts in November 2023, and in March 2024 he was sentenced to 25 years in prison. An appeals court upheld the conviction in June 2026, and in September 2026 he asked the US Supreme Court to review the case.

Did FTX customers get their money back?

Many have been repaid, but in dollars. The bankruptcy valued customer claims in US dollars as of 11 November 2022, not in the coins held, and payments have come in several rounds over years. The FTX Recovery Trust's own notices have the current figures.

Is it safe to keep bitcoin on an exchange?

It carries a risk that holding your own keys does not: the exchange can fail, be hacked or misuse funds, and your balance is then only a claim against the company. How much risk is reasonable depends on the amount and your skills, and a qualified professional can advise on your situation.
